Department of Biotechnology

Department of Biotechnology was established in the year 2004 on July 3rd. The perspective of the Biotechnology is the use of technology in the living system for the betterment of all living organism by carrying out research work backed up with a strong theory foundation. Biotechnology covers almost all areas of life science, viz, Microbiology, Bio-Chemistry, Bio-Physics, Bio-Statistics, Enzymology, Bio-Informatics and the other allied subjects. Biotechnology lab studded with Tissue culture lab is the highlight of this course offered by Al-Ameen College.



To make students aware of the relevance, scope and the application of Biotechnology in the present world and forthcoming generation.

To make students to stand on their own and work independently to mould their career.



To explore different areas of biotechnology.

To employ safe and ethical research experiments aimed for the betterment of all living systems.

SEMINAR ON "INNOVATIONS TO SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE AND FOOD PROCESSING" HELD ON 04/11/2016
On 4 th November 2016 Renewable Energy Centre, Mithradam ha d conducted a Seminar on “Innovations to Sustainable Agriculture and Food Processing”. The welcome address was given by Dr George Peter, the Director of Mithradam. It was short and inspiring. We were curious to know various aspects of Renewable Energy Sources. Dr Albert Esper, CEO of Innotech Ingenieursgesellsehaft, Germany gave us the first talk. He conveyed us the post harvesting processes using renewable energy. Innovation and Knowledge management are the driving forces behind successful small scale agriculture in developing countries. Innovative agriculture practices use of natural resources like bees, water management, post harvest technologies and green logistics has great potential to increase the income of small farmers in sustainable way. Innovations also foster growth across the entire value chain from the farm. Dr Shaji James P, th e professor of Faem Power, K.A.U explored a new world of energy conservation for homestead agriculture in Kerala. The seminar was intended to promote the transfer of knowledge and the creation of a modern value chain from growing crops storing the harvest processing it and marketing to consumers resulting in a “ One world-No Hunger” situation in the world. Dr Mary Regina F, water Engineering K.A.U provided a great opportunity to understand about the water management process. Mr. Bobby Issac and Dr. Issac Adodadji conveyed the challenge and marketing opportunities in India and International Partnership on Ecofair principles in India and Sanzibar Respectively. The knowhow emerging will be used for the development of education and training programmes and projects undertaken by Mithradam intended for the promotion of a sustainable innovation model effecting structural changes in agriculture and post harvest technologies worldwide.
 
“World Environment Day Celebration-2016 Held On 15/06/2016
The Department of Biotechnology organized “World Environment Day Celebration-2016” with the support of Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment on 15th June 2016 at Seminar Hall at 10.00 am. The seminar sought to give a human face to Environmental issues. Dr. Anita Nair, Principal, presided over the meeting. Rahimol Ramesh, Head of the Department of Biotechnology welcomed the gathering. Sri. Darmarajan T.K, environmentalist inaugurated the programme and addressed the students. The inauguration was highlighted by the presentation of Seeds to the participant colleges. The talk delivered by Sri. Darmarajan T.K , Environmentalist on "Environmental Hazards in Kerala" underlined the importance of environmental issues and how to solve these issues by implementing positive action. The talk was inspiring and motivating . The second Session began with an Essay Writing Competition on "Plan for the Planet". 12 students from our College and 14 students from neighbouring colleges participated in the competition. Two judges from various departments of the college evaluated the competition.The third session began with the Poster designing Competition on “Only one Earth,Care and Share”. 10 students from different College Students participated in the competition. A short film named "No Green No Life" was presented to the audience. The fourth Session was handled by Dr. V. Madhu , Assistant Professor, Atmospheric Science, CUSAT on "Environmental changes due to Climate change". His talk was highly informative and enlightening.. Around 162 students participated in the programme. The session concluded with the prize distribution by Dr.Junaid Rahman, Manager, Al Ameen College followed by valedictory function. The aim of the Program was to create awareness among the participants on responsibility of each and every individual in protecting our environment and also on the consequences if we fail to do so. Feedbacks from the participant were positive. This event had highly motivated them and they also enjoyed taking part in all technical events. The entire program was coordinated by Mrs Rahimol Ramesh, H O D , Dept. of Biotechnology, Mrs Alphy Nisa Steaphen, Asst. prof., Mrs Jina Davis, Asst. Prof., and Mrs. Dhanya.v, Asst. Prof., Dept. of Biotechnology. The Biotechnology students wholeheartedly co-operated to make the event a grand success.
 
INTERNATIONAL OZONE ALERT DAY 2015 HELD ON 23/09/2015
The Department of Biotechnology organized "International Ozone Alert Day 2015" with the support of Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment on 23rd September 2015 at Seminar Hall at 10.00 am. The seminar sought to underline the significance and the inevitability of the ozone layer for the protection of our planet. Dr. Anita Nair, Principal, presided over the meeting. Rajeena K B, Head of the Department of Biotechnology welcomed the gathering. Dr.Junaid Rahman, Manager, Al Ameen College inaugurated the programme and addressed the students. The inauguration was highlighted by the presentation of saplings to the participant colleges. The talk delivered by Dr. Venu G Nair, Assistant Professor, Dept of Atmospheric Science, CUSAT on "Ozone and its impact on living system" underlined the importance of ozone in our present environmental condition and its toxicity to the living system. The talk was highly informative and enlightening. The second Session started with an Intercollegiate Quiz Competition on "Ozone Science, Environmental Protection". Five teams from the neighbouring colleges participated in the competition. Two judges from various departments of the college evaluated the competition. The third session started with the painting Competition on “Protecting Our Atmosphere For The Future Generation”. 30 students from Al Ameen International Public School participated in the competition. A short film named "Ozzy Ozone" was presented to the audience. The fourth Session was handled by Sri C. R Neelakandan on "Development policy based on Ozone". His talk was inspiring and motivative. Around 156 students participated in the programme. The session concluded with the prize distribution followed by valedictory function. To commemorate this event Sri C.R Neelakandan planted a sapling named "Lakshmi Tharu" in our Herbal Garden. The entire focus of the Program was to create public awareness on the role of Ozone layer, to educate students about the Ozone and its vitality, to create awareness among students to help to reduce the pollutants that directly or indirectly harm us, to know how to balance the natural atmosphere, save Ozone and save life, awareness about UV radiation and its effect as well as to replace CFC free items. Feedback from the participants was highly positive. This event had highly motivated them and they also enjoyed taking part in all technical events. The entire program was coordinated by Mrs Rajeena K.B, H.O.D, Dept. of Biotechnology, Mrs Amrutha Varghese, Ms Rahimol Ramesh, and Mrs. Alphy Nisa steaphen, Dept. of Biotechnology. The Biotechnology students wholeheartedly co-operated to make the event a grand success.
 
BLOOD GROUPING CAMP On 01/12/2014
Biotechnology Department conducted a medical camp on behalf of world AIDS day on December 1st 2014 in association with ACOSA . The theme of 2014 AIDS Day is FOCUS, PARTNER,ACHIEVE-AN AIDS FREE GENERATION. The programme was inaugurated by Adv. Eldhose P. kunnapilly , Ernakulam District Panchayat President. Followed the Felicitation by our principal Professor Abdul Karim sir and also ACOSA president T.A.M. Basheer. Soon after the inauguration, Blood Grouping, GRBS, BMI checkup was commenced. There were almost 30 peoples from the outside the college locality,and also students and teachers are the successful running of this event. camp lasted till 3:15 pm. There was a strong support from the addressees which included students and teachers from different departments. The participation of the non teaching staff added to the magnitude of our event.
 
World Food Day Celebration Held On 17/10/2014
Department of Biotechnology conducted a talk on behalf of Department Association Inauguration on 17th celebrate World Food Day. The Focal theme of the talk was "Choose right, eat healthy feel better" the programme was inaugurated by our Principal Prof K.M Abdul Karim. The Key note address was given by Mrs. Gayathri Asokan , Famous nutritionist & dietian in South India.She delivered an informative speech on food habit& diet for a healthy life and also she said healthy and easy weight gain according to your budget and likes.This balanced diet plan help to improve your energy level and overall wellness.There was strong participation from the audience for the interactive session . We thank all our teachers and students for making it a great event.
 
Photo Exhibition - Freedom Struggle Held On 14/08/2014
The Department of Biotechnology conducted an Photo exhibition on Freedom Struggles August 14th 2014. The exhibition was inaugurated at 11 am by our Principal Prof K.M Abdul Karim. The special feature of the event was to remember our leaders of Nation and Freedom Fighters. The enthusiastic participation of our fellow teachers and other students added to the entire event. The comments in the feedback book left for the purpose conveyed their interest and appreciation for photo exhibition - Freedom Struggles. The exhibition wound up at 3 pm. The department had a great sense of satisfaction in the whole proceedings of the exhibition and gratitude to the participants who endeavored to make this a big success.
 
Dental Check up On 14/03/2014
Department of biotechnology organized an one day free dental campaing in association with KIMS hospital Edapally on 14 th of MARCH 2014,as an extension activity. The program was inaugurated by one of the famous Television mini screen actor and director Mr.Adam Ayub. & Dr.Jomy, KIMS hospital gave a speech on healthy teeth and precuations. After the inaugral ceremony, a Team of Three Member set a room which Reminds of Typical Doctors room for Consulting . There was strong support from Students and the local residents that we were able to get in touch with almost Hundred of people ,around 20 local residents made their appearance., In addition to the medical camp KIMS also managed to diagonous the blood glucose level, which really attracted many peoples..students were so instrumental that they were successful in maintaining discipline throught the session and they also managed to bring up a registeration counter amidst of theirressible rush from the side of the students and the general public. Department of biotechnology extends our sincere thanks to every one especially to the local residents and college authorities for making this event a memorable one

Department of biotechnology made a trip to manoothy on 5th March 2014 to witness one of the great keralas grand exhibition on agriculture SOUTH INDIAN AGRI FEST 2014 . There were around 250 stalls, of that hundred were biotech related. We also brought some medicinal plants for our college.

Reminisce Of Prem Nazeer On 16/01/2014
Department Of Biotechnology conducted a remembrance day on 16th of January (Thursday) at the seminar hall. The program being entitled as "Prem Nazeer Anusmaranam", was a full day program, being inaugurated by Mr. Devan (Cine Artist) at sharp 11 am. After the inaugural session, students of different department conducted various cultural program viz: Nair's song, Dress code, dialogues,as a tribute to the great Indian actor. We also managed to set up a cinema hall to exhibit a "All Time Hit" of Nazir's Film, CID NAZIR. There was exceptionally a high audience support to watch the legend acting in old 80's. Department of Biotechnology extends our sincere gratitude to all the supporters of this program.
 
Seminar on Civil service (IAS,IPS,IFS) On 10/01/2014
Department of Biotechnology conducted a Civil service (IAS,IPS,IFS) seminar on 10/1/2014 sponsored by Victor growth, a private coaching institute, Vytilla. The programe being inaugurated by our respected principal, Prof: Abdul Karim and the talk was handled by Mr Jagadesh Vijay, Senior consultant-Victor growth. The program aimed on the different aspects and prospectus of civil service training. Seminar focused on "How to be a civil service aspirant"?The program was so lively that the students from different department gathered and attended our program. There was a small interactive session after the seminar, so that the students were able to solve their queries on this amazing world of opportunities. We really find it hard to wind up this seminar as the students were really shooting question at the resource person and by the end of our program they were really close to being a civil servant. Department of Biotechnology extends our sincere gratitude to all the supporters of this programme.
 
Talk On Vermicomposting Held On 02/01/2014
Department of biotechnology conducted a talk show on vermi composting and organic farming as a part of extension activity. The program being handled by Mr Shashidharan, a former Hindi teacher and the recipient of best farmer award in thrithala, agri -fare and at the state level. we aimed to provide a better farming experience to the local fellow peoples and the conventional farmers. Resource person managed to bring some live breed of earth worms to demonstrate the pharming procedures. Throughout his talk, he propagated a sense of “organic farming safe farming” thought among the audience. At the end of his session he invited each and every audience to come and visit his farm land. We felt proud to organize such a great community extension activity.Each and every audience are aware of the threat of various chemical fertilizers and the advantage of cost free-yet effective technique of Bio farming.
 
Regional Seminar on Food and Healthy Life Style On 05/11/2013
Department of Biotechnology conducted a One day Regional Seminar on Food and Healthy Life Style. Our event was segmented into 7 sessions and each segment was headed by different eminent personalities.
The first session comprised of Inaugural ceremony. The programme was inaugurated by our respected principal, Prof A.K Abdul Karim sir, followed by a small talk on wellness. The second Session was handled by Varghese Antony M.D who literally provided a verbal feast to the audience by his talk on "Food Habits and Diseases". This was followed by an interactive third session. Audience made proper use of this session for figuring out their queries in food habits. Session IV included a talk by a foreign national on nutrition and food habits, Mrs. Martina Wocko, (Food Engineer, Berlin).
After the lunch break, Session V started with a talk on Ayurvedic dietetics by Dr. Lathika MD, Sarathy Ayurveda hospital, followed by a short interactive session. There was a strong support from the addressees which included students and teachers from different departments. The participation of the non teaching staff added to the magnitude of our event.
 
SEMINAR ON AIDS AWARENESS AND PROPHYLAXIS HELD ON 28/11/2013
Department of Biotechnology conducted a talk on AIDS Awareness And Prophylaxis on 28th of November 2013, as a part of AIDS day. The programme being inaugurated by, His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Davis Chiramel (Kidney priest) accompanied by Adv. Benny, Chairman of Kidney foundation of India. Students from different backgrounds came and attended our programme. He delivered an informative and inspiring speech on AIDS and the mode of its infection and also entreated the audience to live in complete harmony with AIDS patient and never to be at odds with them. Programme was presided over by Adv. Benny, Chairman of Kidney foundation of India. He, being a kidney patient himself, depicted his story through his speech. At the end of the programme, as a part of charity work, we donated pretty good amount of money for a kidney patient for his treatment. There was strong participation from the audience and several queries were made during the speech at almost regular intervals. We thank all our guest, teachers and students for making it a fabulous one.
 
Teacher's Day Celebration
Department of Biotechnology conducted Teacher's Day Celebration on 5th September 2013. Celebration was formally inaugurated by Rev. Father Thomas John ( Former HOD, Dept of Psychology, UC College, Aluva) followed by a short inspiring talk to all the teachers. We also planned some cultural activities and games viz, Musical Chair, Doll Pass etc, which are being participated by each & every teachers of Al-Ameen College. Before that, a TEACHERS DAY CAKE was sliced by our Honorable Principal K.M Abdul Karim to welcome all the teachers by a mouthful of sweets. Our Celebration winded up with the distribution of "Best Teacher Award" from each department of our College. All our mighty teachers were really enthusiastic and really co-operated with us to make this celebration a memorable one.
 
Eye Camp On 12/03/2013
We conducted free eye checkup and eye donation awareness under the campaign of Tony’s Eye Speciality Hospital, Alwaye, fulfilling one of its strategic issues of establishing a social work policy that is in conformity with the spirit of mercy to humanity. The event being inaugurated by MLA Sri Hibi Eden at 11am by lightning and spreading the candle among the audience. Guest of honour Adv A Jayasankar passed off his consent letter followed by staff and students of Al-Ameen College to Mr Chinnan Painadath, vice president of Darsana Eye Bank, Alwaye. The program was presided over by our principal Professor Abdul Karim sir. Soon after the inauguration, eye testing was commenced. There were almost 10 refractionists for the successful running of this event. The first person to go through the testing panel was our respected principal Prof K.M Abdul Karim. Eye camp lasted till 3 pm. Large number of students come forward and join with this project with the goal of giving special care for the eyes which are the lamp of our body.

Food Fiesta On 18/02/2013
The Department of Biotechnology conducted an exhibition on worldwide cuisines, "Food Fiesta 2013" on 18/2/2013. The exhibition was inaugurated at 11 am by our Principal Prof K.M Abdul Karim. The special feature of the event was the demonstration and highlighting of homemade items. An unexpected visit was made by our respected Manager Jb. Abdul Rahman ( IPS) who made it a point to taste each and every items. The comment he penned after the visit on the white board “All Items were Found Tasty” said it all. He also advised the student visitors to the exhibition to sample each and every dish. Moments like this made the event highly remember able. The enthusiastic participation of our fellow teachers and other students added to the entire event. The comments in the feedback book left for the purpose conveyed their interest, enjoyment and appreciation for ‘Food Fiesta 2013.’ The exhibition wound up at 1 pm. Debate on Mayans Calendar On 17/12/2012
A debate conducted under the topic “The validity of Mayans Calendar” was really a perfect blend of information and fun. Mrs Jemy John, former HOD of M.Sc Physics being the moderator. Students of 1st and 2nd Biotech were grouped into 2, counted to 6 members each, one favoring while the other arguing the validity of Mayans calendar. You can see from the picture gallery that the debate wasn't just an argument, it was really packed with logic and entertainment. Event was flooded with sharp-sighted, strong peace of argument and counter arguments, as sharp as a needle and many time our moderator find it hard to control those ruthless groups.
 
Seminar on the awareness of AIDS On 05/12/2012
A seminar on AIDS was conducted by Narsia beevi, student of 2nd year biotechnology in connection with the AIDS day. Throughout this one hour seminar, She clearly detailed the history, natural evolution and the antigenic variation of HIV viruses, different modes of transmission of HIV, various symptoms and prophylaxis. She also presented some disturbing facts related to this fatal disease and other related syndromes. In fact, it was not just a class, it really made the audience aware of having a safe sex with their mates and the seminar also summons of being honest with their partners.
 
Quiz Competition on Life Sciences on 21th September, 2012.
A quiz competition on Life science was conducted for the Bio Tech students. H.O.D being the Quiz master. Winners were applauded by principal on behalf of AL- Ameen College and prizes were distributed by him after a short seminar
 
Seminar On "Wider Aspects Of Biotechnology And Its Economic Relevance" On 19/07/2012
A Biotech Seminar was conducted by Dr.Jikku Jose (Life time member of union of biotechnologist, CUSAT) on the "Wider aspects of Biotechnology And Its Relevance In Modern World". Almost hundreds of students were gathered from different department of Al Ameen College.
 
Seminar on wider aspects of Biotechnology and its Economic relevance On 19/07/2012
Dr. Jikku Jose, life time member of the society of biotechnologist, presented a seminar on biotechnology regarding the recent advancements and wider application of biotechnology in India and abroad as well. This seminar was mainly intended to the our new comers to welcome them to the field of enormous opportunity. The strategy behind this seminar was to make aware of the audience, regardless of their background (field of interest), the very "NEED" of biotechnology. Seminar also displayed some of the fellowships and other grants that the biotechnologist can apply and enjoy for their research life.
 
Biotechnology Association - 2012-13 Inaugurated on 14-07-2012.
An association was framed for the Biotech, named ACBD (Al Ameen college Department of Biotechnology). Presidential address was made by Rajeena K.B (HOD of Biotechnology). An Election was conducted for selecting students for the committee. Bella Raphael and Yedhu Mohan of Ist B.Sc, Thaslima and Narsia of IInd B.Sc were elected to the Executive Committee.
