Department of English

The English Department of Al Ameen College, Edathala offers intensive coaching for students in Mass Communication, Journalism and Advertising with the ultimate aim of enabling them to secure suitable jobs. Periodic "On-the-job training" also expose students to current trends in the above industries. BA Communicative English course was started in 2009, keeping pace with the need for enhanced communicative skills in modern times. A foundation course for mass media, the curriculum aims at enhancing the latent vocational skills of the students and provides intensive training in developing proficiency in English language. A full-fledged language lab for perfecting the pronunciation of the students is an added attraction of the course.

Inauguration of the Association Held On 22/12/2016
The inauguration of the Department association of English was held on December 22, 2016. The function was started around 12 pm. Around 80 students from the whole department were present to attend the session. The august occasion was inaugurated by Leona Lishoy, a cine artist. The function was Sasidharan chaired by the vice- principal of the college Prof.M.B.Sas. The head of the department of English, Prof. K.V.Chitaranjan welcomed the session. Prof. Davis, from the Department of Commerce delivered the felicitation to the occasion. After the inaugural session, the students actively showcased their talents. The session was dispersed at 3.30 pm.
 
UGC Sponsored Language National Seminar Held On 17/02/2016 & 18/02/2016
A UGC sponsored national seminar was decided on 17 th and 18 th of February, 2016 by the Dept. of English and the Dept of Languages on the topic Scope and Challenges in Translation with Reference to English, Hindi, Malayalam and Arabic. But due to unforeseen Hartal on the decided date, it was postponed to 18 th and 19 th of February. The ceremony was inaugurated by The Manager, Dr. Junaid Rahman as opposed to the pre scheduled faculty, Dr. J. Letha, Vice Chancellor, CUSAT. The programme was conceived in six sessions in two days. The invited talks comprised of Dr. Devaki Antharjanam, Prof. C.S. Jayaram, Asst Prof Yahiya Khan U.P, Dr. K.M Sheriff, Dr. Arsu and Sujith Sudhakar from Keltron Institute of Medical Transcription. The function was also enriched with the paper presentations by various faculties, research scholars and students from different colleges and institutions.
 
LIVE RADIO SHOW ON 08/12/2015
Al-Ameen Fest was conducted on 08 DEC 2015. Our Department organized a Live Radio Show. The name of the radio show was AL-AMEEN CAMPUS MIX 99.9. It was well received by the students and staff of the college. Our programme started at 10 a.m. the radio jockeys were Fathima Ashraf and Ameena E.H. of II B.A. Communicative English, and Misna and Zairah of I B.A. Communicative English. All the students and staff also helped to make the event a great success.

VISIT OLD AGE HOME CHUNANGANVELI ON 04/11/2015
The Department of English of Al-Ameen College, Edathala has conducted an old age home visit to Chunanganveli on 04 th of November as a part of our extension activity. 50 students and 3 teachers participated in the programme. We also gave a small contribution to that institution. It was very fruitful for the students to uphold their moral values.
 
ENGLISH ASSOCIATION INAUGURATION HELD ON 14/10/2015
English department of Al-Ameen College conducted Association Inauguration on 14/10/2015, Wednesday entitled Pegasus 2015. The program was coordinated by the student majority along with the help the department faculty. The function was inaugurated by Sir. Captain Raju and was conceived a grand success followed by the eventful cultural activities by the student body. The Chair of the activity was Dr. Anita Nair, Principal of Al-Ameen college and captain Raju as the chief guest. It started with the welcome speech by Anubha K.S, 3 rd B.A. English, followed by the inaugural speech by the honorary chief guest, Captain Raju. Later, speeches of Felicitation were given by Ms. Nazidha Khan, assistant professor, Department of English, Mr. M.P. Sasidharan, H.O.D, Department of Commerce and Ms. Neethu P.M, H.O.D, Department of English. The program was culminated with the vote of thanks by Aromal.B.Krishnan, 1 st B.A. English. Words of Captain Raju are still resonated in the campus which was marked with the pack of wisdom and humour in equal propotion. Though fewer in words, it had left every mind pondering. Whole proceedings were wound up with the delightful cultural programs from the student body.
 
READER'S CLUB INAUGURATION HELD ON 30/10/2014
The Department of English has conducted the inaugural function of Reader's Club on 30/10/2014 at 2.00 P M at the conference hall. The meeting begins with the welcome speech by Badhusha Salim, I B A student. The function was inaugurated by Dr.Anitha Nair, IQAC Cordinator, Al Ameen College. Bisha E Y, HOD, English Department has given the felicitation. The aim of the Reader’s Club is to enhance the reading aptitude among students. It has decided to conduct the meeting of the club once in a week and students are assigned to present a book in each meeting. The meeting was concluded with the Vote of Thanks by Muhsina A E, I BA student.
 
REPORT ON MEDIA VISIT Held on 13/10/2014
The final year students of English Department undertook an industrial visit to the Manorama News Channel and Mazhavil Manorama , Aroor on 13th October 2014 under the guidance of Department Head Bisha E Y and Mr. Viju P V and Ms.Seethal George. The students learnt about the production process of program and news broadcasting practices. They understood the technical aspects of broadcasting and variety of designs and innovations used for production. Being the students of mass communication, media production planning and scheduling activities were found interesting by the students. Head of the editing department discussed about the news production management and the rules & regulations relating to news casting and the students explored the possibility of begin a media professional.
 
CERTIFICATE COURSE - A BASIC DIRECTION TOWARDS JOURNALISM Held On 10/10/2014
The Department of English, Al-Ameen College, Edathala has conducted the inauguration of certificate course titled "A Basic Direction towards Journalism", on 10th October 2014 from 10 A M at the Seminar hall. The course was inaugurated by the young poet Sobin Mazhaveedu, winner of Kumaranasan Kavyapuraskaram 2014.Bisha E Y, the Head of English Department has delivered the presidential address. After that our chief guest Sobin Mazhaveedu formally inaugurated the programme. Later, Ms Seethal George, the lecturer in-charge has given an introductory session as a basic awareness. The session was concluded with a Vote of Thanks.
 
English Association Inauguration Held On 10/10/2014
The department of English Al-Ameen College, Edathala has conducted the inauguration of Department Association on 10th October 2014 from 10.30 am at Seminar hall. The inaugural gathering was auspiciously inaugurated by the famous poet Sobin Mazhaveedu, who received Kumaranasan Kavyapuraskaram 2014. Our principal Prof Abdul Kareem has rendered his valuable words to enrich the programme. Then our chief guest inaugurated the function by lighting the lamb. He has delivered an inspirational speech that throws light to the ordinary life. Mr. Albin Antony was also there to felicitate the stage. The session was concluded with the vote of thanks. Various cultural programmes were carried out in the afternoon session.
 
Mini Documentary Production Programme Held on 08/10/2014
Mini Documentary production The department of English Al-Ameen College Edathala has conducted a mini documentary production programme on 8th October 2014 from 11.30 am at Language Lab. The session was auspiciously inaugurated by Bisha E Y, HOD of English department. The lecturer-in-charge Seethal George has delivered an introductory speech to have awareness Students were given opportunities to create individual mini documentaries along with scripting, recording and editing process. The session was concluded with the vote of thanks.
 
Community Extension Activity
As part of community extension activity, Al -Ameen college has decided to collect cash on 30 th of every month for the poor . The students of English department collected the amount under the supervision of teachers and members of the students council . Students actively participated in this programme .

Achievement - 2014 Held on 25/09/2014
The department of English is proud to present the individual achiever of the year master Abdul Salam, who awarded the best film maker award in the Nirmalyam short film festival conducted by the PG & Research Department of Malayalam, Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha on 25th September 2014.
 
Certificate Course 2013 Certificate Distribution Held On 25/09/2014
The Department of English has distributed the certificate for the certificate course of 2013 - "BASIC ENGLISH FOR COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION" on 25 September 2014. IQAC Co-ordinator Anita Nair distributed the certificates , Bisha E Y , HoD, English Department delivered the presidential address.
 
Seminar on PR campaign – Objectives, Planning, Execution and Evaluation Held On 25/09/2014
The Department of English has conducted a Seminar on PR campaign on 25 September 2014 for our students. The Resource Person was, Mr. Anu Rahim, Lecturer CET College Airapuram. Head of the English Department, Bisha E Y delivered the presidential address. During the seminar, students were introduced to different concepts, and methods of PR campaigns and how it is applicable in organizations. Students are given ample opportunities to explore their opinions and doubts regarding the topic. The department was able to conduct and co-ordinate all the programs in a very disciplined and effective manner which was enriched by enthusiastic student participation.
 
Interview and GD Training on 24/02/2014
The Department of English has organised an intensive Training on Interview and GD skills for 111rd Year students of our college on 24/02/2014 at 10.00 am. This was aimed at improving communication, presentation and interview skills. The first session was on preparing resume, covering letter etc and other matters that a job candidate should observe in general to fare well in an interview. This was handled by Mr. Anu Rahim, Department of English, former BPO professional and Trainer. The participants were also provided with a printed manual on expected interview questions (more than 100) and the different strategies which can be used in tackling them. The second session comprised of GD skills, Dress code and interview practice. This was handled by Dr. Anita Nair, HOD of English Department.
 
SEMINAR ON ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT On 07/02/2014
English department of Al- Ameen College, Edathala conducted a seminar on 07-02-2014 on the topic "ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT" The inauguration was at 10:30 A.M the H O D of the Department inaugurated the function .All the students of third B.A English and teachers participated in the programme. The Resource person was C K Vishnu Prakash, Associate Chartered Accountant. Students actively participated in the seminar. It was very fruitful for the students.
 
COMMUNITY EXTENSION ACTIVITY On 31/01/2014
The students and faculty of the Department of English visited the Anganvadi of Nochima, Aluva on 31/01/2014 as a part of the Community Extension Activity. It provided the students an opportunity to see, teach and mingle with the students. The students distributed sweets ,pencils and hand made gifts to them.They also made them to do various activities such as colouring,drawing etc.The students entertained them with saying stories and singing English rhymes. Through this the students taught them small English words also.
 
Talent Expo On 24/01/2014
As a part of the departmental fest Rhapsody – 2014, we have organised a Talent Expo on 24/01/2014. This was to provide an opportunity for the students of our Department to showcase their talents in various forms of performing arts. The Chief Guest of the program, Mr. K.D Sebastian, the renowned modern day Malayalam poet and social activist, inaugurated the program. Popular film actress and celebrity, Ms. Neena Kurup, added to the hue and colour of the inaugural ceremony by lighting the lamp. After the Inaugural ceremony, students from our department show cased their talents in various forms of art. The entire faculty and the students of the department actively took part in the program. On the whole, the program was conducted in a good and befitting manner without compromising in the discipline and values of the institution.
 
Work Shop on Film Studies Held on 22/01/2014
As a part of the departmental fest Rhapsody – 2014, we have organised an Inter Collegiate Two Day Workshop on Film Studies on 22nd and 23rd of January 2014, in collaboration with the Renaissance team of Sree Sankara College, Kalady.
On Day 1, 22/01/2014
The morning session was handled by Dr CK Sujeesh and Mr. Pranav Dange. Dr CK Sujeesh began the session with a class on the basics of Cinema with special focus on different kinds of shots, frames and camera movements. Movie clips from 4 different movies viz; Celluloid, Shutter, Mission Impossible and expendables were shown with the purpose of identifying the number of shots and the tone, mood and rhythm of shots. It was followed by a session from Mr. Pranav Dange who gave notes on various shots and also explained the same with the help of Pictures. He explained camera movements further and gave practice exercises on preparing shots. The afternoon session was handled by Ms. Shelja PR. She focused on the basics of Lighting and different types of Lighting. ‘The Book of … Not For Sale’, a short film made by Renaissance, which won the 3rd prize in National Short Film Competition 2013 was shown in the session.
On Day 2, 23/01/2014
The morning session was handled by Ms. Bincy Jacob and Ms. Sumashree Sukumaran. Ms. Bincy Jacob focused on production and its various aspects. Ms. Sumashree Sukumaran handled the technical aspects and concepts of film making like Montage and Mise en scene. This was followed by a group activity on shot film making. The students, who were divided into 5 groups, used the college campus for making short films. The afternoon session was handled by Dr. Preethi Nair and Mr. Gokul M Nair. Dr. Preethi Nair explained different concepts and techniques of editing. Mr. Gokul M Nair explained different elements of film making like Pre production, Production and Post production. This was followed by a class on cinematic conventions and strategies. The workshop included two group activities for the participants who were divided into 5 teams. The teams were guided by Mr. Jerin Jolly, Mr. Pranav Dange, Mr. Gokul M Nair, Ms. Sumashree Sukumaran, Ms. Shelja PR and Ms. Bincy Jacob. Alongside the workshop, we have also conducted a Photography Competition and a Quiz Contest.
 
Class Tour On 06/12/2013
The Department of English has arranged a tour programme for our final year students 2010-2013 batch on 6 December 2013. We left Aluva by 4.00 am in the morning and reached Wayanad by 11.00 am. We visited two places Kuruva Island and Edakkal Caves. We departed from Wayanad by 4.00 am in the evening and reached back at Aluva by 11.00 pm at night. The department succeeded in organizing the trip well and everything went as was planned. There was no incident of any discipline breach during the trip. The students, the accompanying faculty and the parents were happy and satisfied with the trip.
 
Seminar on Cyber Ethics Held On 29/11/2013
The Department of English has arranged a Seminar on "Cyber Ethics and Laws" on 29 November 2013 for our students. The Resource Person was Adv. P.A Ayoob Khan, Special Prosecutor, Govt. of Kerala. Principal of the college, Prof. Abdul Karim delivered the presidential address and the valedictory speech was made by Dr. Anita Nair, HOD, Department of English. During the seminar, students were introduced to different concepts, legal provisions and procedures regarding cyber crimes and cyber ethics. The department was able to conduct and co-ordinate all the programs in a very disciplined and effective manner which was enriched by enthusiastic student participation.
 
Cancer Ward Visit – General Hospital Ernakulam
The Department of English has arranged a Cancer ward visit on 27 November 2013 as a part of its social and community extension activities. Selected students and faculty from the department visited the Oncology department of the General Hospital, Ernakulam and their cancer ward. The program was split in to two sessions. The First session consisted of an Awareness Class on various types of Cancer, its causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. It was conducted at their video conferencing hall and was lead by Dr. Mohan, HOD of Oncology Department. The session was quite useful and informative. The second session consisted of the cancer ward visit. The students and the accompanying faculty spent their time with the cancer patients and interacted with them. Though the patients were obviously under excruciating pain, they were quite happy and relieved when they found someone to share their pain, sufferings, and experiences. The joy that emanated from them as a result of the visit was a huge source of satisfaction for the students and the faculty. The following members of the faculty took part in the program

National Education Day Celebration Held On 11/11/2013
As a part of the National Education Day celebration of the college, the Department of English has organised a Quiz Contest on 11 November 2013. The theme of the Quiz was "Science and Society". The program was co-ordinated by Mr. Viju PV, faculty of the department of English. Mohammed Aslam our first year student was the Quiz Master. Five teams, each consisting of two members, participated in the first round of the contest. Three teams out of this were selected to the final round. The winner of the competition was team Einstein consisting of Shalini Anilkumar and Jisna Thomas. The runners up were team Darwin consisting Merin MJ and Jesiya KN. The quiz contest was followed by a formal Talk by Dr. Anita Nair, HOD of the Department of English on the importance of English language in the field of science. The program was concluded with a Power Point presentation on Legendary Scientists by Anubha KS of 1 BA English.

Exhibition on the topic “Literary Giants through the ages” on on 22-03-2013.
English Department of Al-Ameen College, Edathala conducted an exhibition on 22-03-2013 on the topic “Literary Giants through the ages”. The Exhibition was inaugurated by the Principal Prof K.M Abdul Karim. All the students and the teachers of Al-Ameen College participated in the Programme. The students themselves prepared the photos of literary persons. The Photos of thirty personalities from different ages were there. Students actively participated in the exhibition. All the teachers of the department guided the students. It was very fruitful for the students.

Seminar on “Print Media and Journalism “
A seminar on “Print Media and Journalism “ was conducted by Dept of English on 19-03-13 at Seminar hall from 10 am to 12:30 pm.The Resource person was Sunaina Nazar ( MES College,Marmpilly). The seminar gives a basic idea about Journalism, feature writing, news reporting etc. It was very useful for the students.
 
Debate on the topic, “How. Technology Affects Youth”, 15/03/13.
The students were asked to select 5 students among themselves so as to represent their class in the debate, and the rest of the students participated as the audience. The programme was made a grant success by the active participation by the students and often transcended into heated depths.
